Student Bursaries

The Textile Society is committed to supporting and developing the study of textiles in the UK.

 

The Society’s Student Bursaries of up to £1,000 support BA and MA final year projects or dissertations, internships and apprenticeships.

Bursaries under this scheme aim to supply additional financial support to individuals studying within the broad area of textiles.

Students undertaking education in any textiles, fashion or textile related course in the UK are eligible to apply.

Applications are invited from all areas of art and design with a textile focus. These are broadly described to allow for all aspects of textile education.

Closing date: Midnight 12 February 2021.

 

Bursaries Criteria

The judges are looking for creative projects that are viable and have vision.

Students must be individual members of the Textile Society.

Application Process

The application process has two stages:

  1. The initial application.
  2. A shortlist of finalists who will be invited to show their work at the Manchester Antique and Vintage Textile Fair in March 2021 where the bursaries will be judged and presented.
    (Expenses of up to £100 will be reimbursed to each finalist.)
Requirements

You may make one application only. Applications should include:

  1. Your application form, including your individual Textile Society membership number.
    You must complete all sections of the application form.
  2. A clear outline of your project (maximum 500 words) describing the concept, research, development and context for the work.
  3. An additional paragraph (maximum 300 words) explaining how the Textile Society funding could further your project.
  4. An outline of the approximate cost of materials, research, travel or other proposed expenditure to add context to your application and enable you to plan ahead.
  5. A visual presentation of your project consisting of up to 10 slides in PowerPoint
Important
  1. A working liaison with successful applicants in receipt of an award is encouraged.
    As such, the Textile Society should be appropriately acknowledged and the Textile Society logo should be displayed on all written material.
    The Society should be provided with a report which may be published in Text (the Textile Society journal).
    The editors of Text are happy to work with successful applicants to achieve a published outcome.
  2. By submitting images to the Textile Society the applicant grants permission for all images to be used by the Textile Society for the purposes of publicity, including, but not limited to, use on the public website and social media channels, and all other publicity material such as the Textile Society journal Text, News, posters, etc.
    It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all material is fully cleared for these purposes.
  3. The Textile Society journal Text is archived by the British Library.
    By submitting images to the Textile Society it is deemed that the applicant grants permission for all material to be archived.
Submission
  1. Documents should be in Word or PDF format.
  2. The documentation should not exceed four sides of A4.
  3. All documents and PowerPoint presentation should be clearly titled with the name of the student submitting the application.
  4. Please send your project proposal and presentation, together with the completed application form, to bursaries@textilesociety.org.uk
  5. Submissions exceeding 25MB should be sent using an online transfer service for large files.
  6. Confirmation of receipt of your application will be sent within one week of the closing date. If you do not hear from us, please get in touch.
  7. Shortlisted students will be notified two weeks before the Manchester Antique and Vintage Textile Fair.
  8. Applications that have not adhered to the above criteria may not be considered.
  9. The Textile Society Committee decision is final.
